“The Sacred Harp” is the name of the book we sing from. It is often said that the sacred harp is a metaphor for the human voice. The collection was first published in 1844, in Georgia, USA, and is part of a communal singing tradition that includes music that is much older, as well as more recent compositions.

Initially published in 1902 by W M Cooper, it has been through several revisions, and was known as The B F White Sacred Harp between 1949 and 2006. Initially it

It is a proudly inclusive and democratic part of our shared cultural heritage. Participants are not concerned with re-creating or re-enacting historical events. Shape note music is a 200-year-old, uniquely American style of hymn singing. This tradition is also known as Sacred Harp, after the title of the best-known shape note tunebook. These haunting 4-part harmonies are sung in powerful, exuberant style, with singers seated in an open square. All-day or multi-day singing conventions, with traditional potluck “dinner on the grounds” at noon, are the core of the Sacred Harp tradition.
